Learning to Surf in the Summer

We spent a week at the beach last summer. I took three surf lessons from a tan instructor named Kai.

My first twenty tries, I fell into the salty water before I even stood up. Kai kept saying, "Lower your knee, patience, patience."

On the last lesson, I finally stood for four seconds. Four real seconds. Kai yelled, the ocean was cold, and I felt like a true surfer.
