The Weekend Chess Tournament

I joined a small regional chess tournament last Saturday. The event hall was very quiet, only the soft click of pieces on boards.

My first opponent was a sixth grader who beat me in nine moves. I almost went home. Instead I ate a sandwich and studied my next match.

I won the following three games, including one against a kid who had won trophies before. I finished fifth out of forty-two — my best ever.
