Winning Third in the Poetry Contest

Our English teacher entered me in a regional poetry contest. I wrote a short piece about my late grandmother's rice cooker.

The prompt was "something ordinary." My poem had ten short lines and took me four weekends to get right.

I placed third out of 160 entries. The judge wrote in her note that my poem made her cry a little. That meant more than the small trophy.
