More than 400 such libraries now operate in North America, lending everything from basic wrenches to industrial sanders.

Members pay a small annual fee, usually under $60. That single fee can replace hundreds of dollars of rarely used tools lying idle in garages.

Beyond savings, the libraries create skill-sharing circles. Retired carpenters teach first-time homeowners how to install shelves without wrecking a wall.
