The Rise of Community Tool Libraries
by Alex Kao · Apr 2026
A tool library works exactly like a book library: borrow a drill, return it. Volunteers handle intake, cleaning, and tool .
More than 400 such libraries now operate in North America, everything from basic wrenches to industrial sanders.
Members pay a small annual fee, usually under $60. That single fee can replace hundreds of dollars of rarely used tools lying idle in garages.
Beyond savings, the libraries create skill-sharing circles. Retired carpenters teach first-time homeowners how to shelves without wrecking a wall.
