Concerts Are Locking Up the Phones

by Alex Kao · Apr 2026

Dozens of major artists now require audiences to seal phones inside magnetic pouches for the length of the concert. The pouches unlock only at an exit station.

Audiences report being more present and emotionally to the show. Artists say they play differently knowing no one is watching through a 6-inch screen.

The policy is controversial. Accessibility advocates note that some fans need phones for medical reasons, and venues must create clear channels.

Still, post-concert merchandise sales rise at phoneless shows. When people cannot film, they spend more on and vinyl to carry the memory home.
