A new wave of apartment dwellers is gardening on windowsills and shared rooftop plots. Instagram hashtags for "balcony harvest" pass tens of millions of posts per year.

Experts point to rising grocery bills, growing interest in hobbies, and an instinct to with something slow and living.

Unlike the short-lived sourdough craze, gardening seems to stick. Once you have tasted your own basil, the supermarket shelf never looks quite the same.
